SA commission checks up on recall of Galaxy Note 7
THE National Consumer Commission (NCC) said yesterday it had convened a meeting with Samsung Electronics South Africa to assess the progress in recalling the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from the South African market after safety concerns.
Commissioner Ebrahim Mohamed expressed relief that the problem was detected before the Note 7 was launched in South Africa.
“The NCC has been made aware of the pre-launch sales that took place in the country, as well as the possibility that the device could have entered the country from overseas as parallel imports. We call on all consumers with active Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile devices in the country to immediately stop using them, and to return them to the nearest Samsung distributor for a full monetary refund or equivalent exchange,” said Mohamed.
In September, Samsung notified the commission that it was implementing a voluntary exchange programme. Samsung has extended this to consumers who bought the device overseas.
There has been a global airline ban on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, including SAA, Angola Airlines and Air Botswana, amid concerns that there is a fire danger risk associated with them. – ANA
