Terence Pillay is ready to stir

- What is your earliest food memory? What is it about cooking and food competitio­ns and programmes that you think appeals to so many people? Who is your favourite chef ?

RADIO and television personalit­y Terence Pillay will play host at the Gateway Celebrity Chef Showdown. He spoke to Goodlife about his love of food.

My aunt, who lived next door to us, used to bake cakes quite regularly. I remember standing at her side when I was about 5 or 6 years old waiting to lick the wooden spoon.

It was a long drawn-out affair because she made everything from scratch and by hand – no fancy mixers or electric beaters; it was the 1970s, after all. We would only get to eat the cake that evening after it had cooled down and she’d iced it. I’m still pretty fond of a vanilla sponge cake with butter cream icing.

I think with the emergence of reality TV cooking shows, everybody believes they can now be the next MasterChef. I like the fact that we’ve become far savvier when it comes to what we eat and question how it’s made. People aren’t content with just sitting in front of their small screens, eating a TV dinner while watching someone else work gastronomy magic. The fact that they can make that too is probably what’s so appealing.

Well, my mother is my favourite chef, but if we’re talking someone famous, I’ve always liked Nigella Lawson. What appeals to me about her brand is that
