The Mercury

Cross-colour love drama for Durban

-

IT’S an all-star affair in the Playhouse Company’s new show, Crepuscule, as some of South Africa’s brightest share the stage.

Nat Ramabulana, Lerato Mvelase, Kate Liquorish, Thami Ngoma, Nhlanhla Mahlangu and Matthew Lotter star in the play by one of South Africa’s most respected writers, the late Can Themba.

Crepuscule is an interpretation of Themba’s real-life love affair with a white woman, Jean Hart, during the 1950s. Set in Sophiatown, the play asks pertinent and contemporary socio-political questions. Themba and Hart’s illicit relationship across the apartheid “colour bar” unpacks just how much of our identity is formed by our environment and how much is shaped by our choices as individuals.

Crepuscule had hit seasons at the Market Theatre and National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Its director, Khayelihle Dom Gumede, won best director at last year’s Naledi Awards, where the production received six nominations.

Crepuscule will run in the Playhouse Loft Theatre from May 3-7, with school performances in the mornings (R30). Public shows: R80. Call 031 369 9407 or book through Computicket.
