Three bodies discovered at Sibanye’s Kloof mine
THREE men were found dead at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Kloof Ikamva shaft after five employees entered an abandoned working place yesterday.
Sibanye-Stillwater said mine rescue teams were still searching for the other two men. “Sadly, three employees have been retrieved and declared deceased,” said the company.
Sibanye-Stillwater expressed its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased employees.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) expressed its anger and concern at the rate at which mining incidents were happening at Sibanye-Stillwater.
“It seems that disasters have become the order of the day at Sibanye-Stillwater, and as NUM, we are highly disturbed and angered by this as this company is leading the pack in terms of fatalities and the number of deaths per mine.
“This is unacceptable as we don’t sell our lives, limbs or lungs to the industry, but our labour to provide for our families. The Department of Mineral Resources and its inspectorate must now act and act hard on this employer, or bear the might of NUM,” said Peter Bailey, NUM’s health and safety chairperson.
