INNOVATION USING SCIENCE
UNIVERSITY of KwaZulu-Natal mechanical engineering final year students Mishkar Bhana, Nhlakanipho Perfect Ndlovu and Tristan Chanderdeo with their vintage off-road rally vehicle, which they and teammate Ryan Somai will showcase today at an open day event at Howard Campus. The rally vehicle project, which is almost roadworthy, involved the conversion of a 1968 VW Beetle. Over the past 10 months, final year students have worked on projects that cover community awareness, research, design and innovation. Another project on display today is a variable inlet guide vane axial flow turbine, designed by Muhammad Sheik, Cherisse Govender, Muhammad Zaid Saib and Lloyd Govender for installation in the Injisuthi River, near a rural community, to provide electricity and/or mechanical power for agricultural needs.
