Go on being loyal South Africans
THE pronouncements of the so-called experts on Indian South Africans and their gains from apartheid, delivered by Dawie Roodt and Bonke Dumisa demand a response.
First and urgently, I must remind these two ill-informed, highly prejudiced and abysmally ignorant experts that their findings, and statements have already caused racial hatred and blind profiling in some quarters in the country.
The inflammatory damage has been done. And if at some time an unfortunate and predicted conflagration erupts, Roodt and Dumisa can gain prominence as primary instigators.
I plead with all Indian citizens: go on being Indians, go on being South Africans, go on being hard-working, dedicated, ambitious and loyal citizens of your country.
Did I say your country? This historical fact cannot be denied and should be shouted from the top of the Himalaya Mountains.
I also plead to all South Africans to remember and take note of Indonesia’s national motto: “Harmony in Diversity”. And to ignore the ignorance of these and other ill-informed experts and attempt to learn and appreciate the true history of Indian South Africans. But please first remove the blinkers.
Dear Editor, I make the above pleas as I consider myself supremely capable of doing so, as I have lived my 88 years in South Africa and know my history from A to Zee!
