A poem for Shahiel
I AM A member of a non-profitorganisation – Wonder Women (mid-South Coast). Recently we published a coffee table booklet of poems connected to our work.
One of them, It’s Hard to Forgive, is written in memory of Shahiel Sewpujan whose brutal murder shocked the country.
I am submitting the poem for publication, as something is going dreadfully wrong in our Indian community. It’s Hard to Forgive Black chick peeped out from its cosy little nest
As her mother returned to feed the rest.
Cocker spaniel just had a litter of about seven
Looking as if they were all sent down from heaven.
Ginger held one of her kittens in her mouth
Carefully laying it down on a nearby couch.
An injured vervet monkey to its mother clung
While she gently licked his wound with her tongue. The king of the jungle Stood guard for any possible threat
Watching the cubs
As they suckled the lioness’s breast.
A bruised and battered little body Lay in the drain Cold, lifeless and mercifully No longer feeling any pain. Where was his father, his mother? His kin, his kith Or is the concept of FAMILY Just a myth?
