Volleyball Champions Cup

The Durban University of Technology (DUT), Tongaat’s Liberte and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will be proudly flying the flag of KZN at the Champions Cup, Volleyball South Africa’s (VSA) premier National Inter-Club Championsh­ip for men and women.

VSA’s flagship event takes place at the UKZN’s Westville Campus Sports Centre from September 21-25.

Matches will begin at 9am and end at 7pm each day. On Saturday the women’s final will begin at 12pm with the men’s gold match starting at 2pm. The medals ceremony will follow immediatel­y after the men’s final.

The annual event has attracted a strong field of twenty men’s teams and eight women’s teams from around the country.

According to KZN Volleyball President, Deva Moodliar, the following teams are to participat­e at the national showpiece:

Liberte (Tongaat), Scorpions, Maidstone (Verulam), DUT, UKZN (eThekwini), Kuvuki (uThungulu) and Pietermari­tzburg Volleyball Club.

Seasoned campaigner­s, Watsonia from Tongaat and UKZN (eThekwini) are KwaZuluNat­al’s hopefuls for national champs in the women’s category.

Pulling out all the stops to make it to the podium as medallists in the men’s section are: UWC, All Star Saints (W.Cape); VW (E.Cape); University of Limpopo, Kamplits, Juventus, (Limpopo Province); Vipers, Quantum, UJ, Tukkies and VUT (Gauteng).

Competing in the women’s section are:

UWC (W.Cape); VUT, KAD (Gauteng); Kamplits (Limpopo); Flamingoes (Mpumalanga); UKZN and Watsonia (KZN).

While national team coaches will be present to pencil in names of prospectiv­e candidates for the under 23 and senior teams for both genders, the Champions Cup’s top two teams can also look forward to participat­e in the Zone 6 club championsh­ip scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe later in the year.
