Locals arrest four suspects Nomzamo residents take action in crime fight

- By Tembile Sgqolana

RESIDENTS of Nomzamo in Mlungisi on Sunday apprehended four suspects following a series of robberies and housebreakings in the area this year.

Resident Mnqophiso Naye said it was believed the suspects may be involved in the theft of chickens and clothes lines while several people had been robbed.

He said residents were “tired of sitting around and doing nothing while they were falling victim to crime.

“We decided to stand up and fight for our location. The aim of this is to revive humanity and love among the people of Nomzamo. We will preach this throughout the ward in order to have a crime free area.”

Young people who were occupants of RDP houses were using these to keep stolen goods and were using drugs inside, he claimed. “I want to tell their family members that we will close the houses and take away the keys until an old person from the family comes in and occupies the house.”

Naye said the residents would not assault alleged criminals.

Another resident, Buzani Gcinisa, asked the community to come forward with information when a crime had been committed. “People must not buy stolen goods and must help in the fight against crime. I want all of you to report when your neighbours are abusing their partners. We must not be quiet when people are being victimised.”
