THE Empumelelweni Senior Primary School girls U13 cricket team represented the Queenstown district at the provincial Bakers mini cricket tournament in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday.

The Whittlesea school team won the regional competition last week to qualify for the provincial event.

Empumelelweni coach Mfundo Siyo said the team competed in the regional event against Masambe Junior Primary, Timoti Matshoba Junior Primary, Mthawelanga Junior Primary, Luvuyo Senior Primary, Lo- nwabo Senior Primary and Ixhadi Labantwana Senior Primary last week. “After beating the local teams, the winners of the girls’ and boys’ teams were chosen to represent the district in the provincial tournament.” Eight Empumelelweni boys were selected for the Queenstown district team going to Port Elizabeth. “This shows that there is talent here and the department of sport needs to focus on development of cricket in the rural areas,” he said.

Siyo said the tournaments were part of their preparations for the U16 teams that will compete next year.
