The Rep

What do you think about ...

SHOULD comments expressed on social media pages lead to demotion or suspension? The Rep intern Sapokazi Zongo asked locals what they think.

Siphelo Mbatyazwa from Queenstown

I do not think that suspending people because of things they write on their private pages is right - especially if what they said has nothing to do with the company.

Pretty Gladile from Mlungisi

I think it depends on what the employee wrote. Obviously, if it’s something that could negatively affect the company’s image, the company has every right to take the necessary steps. Some companies explain issues like that in their policies.

Roger Von Schaeffer from Victoria Park

It depends who your employer is and how your em- ployer sees social media. I think as long as what people post is not derogative, everyone should be allowed to post their personal opinions about issues without the fear of being suspended or anything. What is democracy if people are not granted freedom of speech?

Vuvu Dlamini from Mlungisi

It is wrong but at the same time, some jobs restrict what their employees can post on social media. Like where I work I am not allowed to make any comment about political parties/issues in public.

Unathi Tologu from Ezibeleni

I think people should be allowed to voice their opinions freely on any platform that appeals to them because let’s face it everyone has an opinion. Being forbidden really is a violation of one’s right of expression.
