THE Eastern Cape has failed to improve on its matric results, with the province's pass rate having dropped to 56,8% from 65,4% the previous year. The Rep reporter Abongile Solundwana asked locals for their thoughts on the results and possible solutions.

Nandipha Tayi from Lady Frere The education department is not doing enough to support our schools. The chopping and changing of curriculum is another con- tributing factor along with teachers who are not trained. The teacher-pupil ratio proposed by the department is another problem. The government must revisit its system. Ntombizodwa Jack

from Aloevale Maths is a challenge which contributes a great deal to our children failing their final year. Schools must consider foreigners when it comes to teaching the subject because they tend to have expertise with the teaching of maths.

Magabi Zaba from New Vale I believe our matrics do not study hard enough. They must put in more effort and those who did not perform well in their final exams must go back to school and redo their matric. Athenkosi Pasela from Nomzamo This generation is not disciplined. Matrics and other pupils must adapt a mindset of surrounding themselves with those who are diligent in their school work. When they get home they must focus on their studies and not wander around.

Thando Joe from Queenstown A lack of resources is the main problem facing Eastern Cape schools. Other provinces have relevant support structures but we do not have enough. The government must provide the necessary means. We also need extra lessons for learners who take their studies seriously.
