No bail call as suspect in court

McBride killings spark protest

MEMBERS of the ANC Women's League, the ANCYL and Lukhanji councillor­s joined hands with McBride community members as murder accused Yolando Lurumo appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with the deaths of two residents of the village.

The Rep reported (“Two McBride murders” January 8) that 75-year-old Nongaqambu Nyewe and Zingisa Mqele who were attacked and stabbed to death on December 27.

Acoording to Bulelwa Mgijima of the ANC Women’s League said those participat­ing in the march were demanding the refusal of bail.

The memorandum, drafted by Mgijima, indicated: “We are here to say enough is enough. We are drawing the line, we are sick of these parent killers. Our parents and sons have no protection. They are constantly killed and murdered by these monsters.”

Mgijima said, “Our society is fast becoming unfriendly to woman. We see perpetrato­rs walking (around) freely, ready to start where they left off.”

She said it was believed that rapes were on the increase, adding that law enforcers were not aggressive in tackling issues of crime.

Lurumo remains in custody and will be back in court on January 25.
