THE recent news of King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo’s ‘preferential’ treatment in prison involving special meals and clothes has caught public attention. The Rep reporter Abongile Solundwana asked residents what their opinions were regarding the matter.

Courage Nkunzana from Queenstown CBD I disagree with the royal treatment. We are all equal with the same rights. If you commit a crime your position no longer matters, the punishment should be the same.

Lindelwa Mtutu from Thulandivile Prisoners do not eat five meals per day, why should he? He has broken the law like any other prisoner. Why must he have bodyguards? I don’t agree with that. A penalty is a penalty for all, it shouldn’t be any different for him. Zukiswa Pulumani

from Newvale It’s unacceptable treatment, he has committed an offence. This is giving him permission to commit more crime.

Siba Sithole from Madeira Park I understand that he is a king but why does he get special care? He has com- mitted an offence. Prisoners should get equal treatment. I blame the police who are in charge for allowing it to happen.

Ashwin Ruiters from Victoria Park No I don’t agree that he should get royal treatment. It’s unfair. Nelson Mandela served his sentence and he wore prison overalls. A crime is a crime and a sentence is a sentence.
