Donors hand over stationery
THE first donation of stationery as part of the #DoYourPart campaign, a local initiative, was handed over to Phumelela Special Care Centre in Ezibeleni last Friday.
The Rep reported (“Please help with stationery – here’s how,” January 15) that Babalwa Magqwanti of Queenstown had approached businesswoman Nomhle Mankayi, former schoolmate and motivational speaker Vuyisani Hans and Mankayi’s son and businessman Buntu to donate stationery to local schools.
This set the ball rolling for a challenge which asked the local business fraternity to help by donating stationery for needy pupils, giving birth to the #DoYourPart campaign.
Those who want to make donations can contact them on their Facebook pages with Nomhle at Sophitsho Guest House, Hans at Vuyisani Hans and Buntu on Skysize Chickens or DBSZB Logistics.
Reacting to the donation this week, centre manager Nobuntu Gulwa said all 78 pupils at the centre received pens, pencils and erasers, rulers and pencil sharpeners.
“This donation makes me very happy as the children did not have stationery before. The teacher will not struggle now and this makes the process of teaching and learning easier. This will make a huge positive difference.”
Gulwa also thanked the Rev Xolani Xolisa Vatela of JZS Ncevu Memorial for his donation of shoe polish and brushes.
Magqwanti said it felt good knowing they had made a difference.
“The feedback has been awesome and a lot of people called, wanting to participate, while others have responded via Facebook. We want to raise more awareness so when we go to other schools we have more to offer,” she said.
Magqwanti said the community was supporting local businesses and it was therefore only fair that the businesses gave back.
