What do you think about ...

THE South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng surprised many people across the country when he announced that all 18 SABC radio stations were instructed to play 90% local music. The Rep reporter

took to the streets to ask music lovers what they thought of this move.

- I think this will help a lot of our local musicians. We all know people have been complaining about the fact that our musicians die poor, so I think this is going to help put something in their pockets, maybe not much but it will make a dif- ference in their lives. It is very good because we have been enriching people from overseas, international artists who are already rich and taking money from all over the world and yet we leave our own local musicians with nothing. This says we are now going to own the statement, “Proudly South African” and it will change the artists’ lives.

- South African radio stations must play local music to promote our artists. Most artists have been complaining about the lack of air play they get on radio stations and that we are always playing overseas music. Even the community radio A: I am generally a positive person. If there is a fight, I am the mediator. I am friendly and I see the best in every situation. A: Whenever our parents were not home, my sister and I used to take a double mattress from the house and put it under a tree. We climbed high up the tree and jumped, landing on the mattress. One day my mother came back unexpectedly, caught us and gave us a good hiding. stations must play local music because we have artists who have inspiring songs that motivate and build our nation. Local music makes us feel at home because musicians sing in our own languages and we lose our culture as we play more overseas music.

- I don’t agree with that – 90% is a bit too much. I think they should go for 50/50 because most of the local musicians sing in a language others don’t understand, so 50/50 should be fair.

- I think its ridiculous. It would be fine if they were playing upcoming

A: It is important that people should develop a business mindset. People need to be more determined to start their own ventures. The country is struggling with job creation.

A: We need to start working together as black and white people. People’s mindsets are still stuck in the past. This is our country and we should get over the race issue. artists but now they end up playing the old music and children are growing up in this new generation, stereotyped by the things of the past because some of those artists were singing about apartheid. We are in a new generation now so we need to promote the new artists instead of playing old music. At least 60% local music would be much better.

– It is a wise move because it gives our musicians a chance to showcase their talents and this will create jobs. There are many people in South Africa with musical talents. The artists just need to be funded and be given more recognition.
