The Rep

Street Store proves very popular

-

EARLY on Saturday a queue had formed at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre and was steadily growing.

The occasion was the first Street Store in the town, an international initiative which allows the needy to “shop” for outfits free of charge.

Familia Christi headed the local Street Store with the support of other churches and The Rep, which donated clothing collected by readers and paper cups for soup, made possible via a donation by Mfundisi Fruiterers.

The clothing, shoes and accessories were divided into men’s, women’s and children’s by volunteers who also assisted the “shoppers” to pick out their outfits.

About 500 men, women and children took great delight in picking through tables of clothing or selecting items hung from hangers on the fence.

“This is great. I’ve never experienced anything like it before,” a young man said, sitting on the grass, trying on a pair of shoes.

An elderly woman approached the store, pointing at a thick, white jersey. “Please can I have that for church?” she asked, her face beaming as the garment was placed in her worn hands.

A man was trying on a tie and a double-breasted suit jacket. “Maybe this will help me find work,” he said.

The visitors joined hands and prayed before leaving, clutching brown paper bags with their new clothing kept tightly to their chests.

Familia Christi has indicated that they hope to host more Street Stores in the near future. The Rep will remain involved and will keep readers updated on how they can join in supporting the event.
