Walker retains title
THE Queenstown Golf Club held a most successful Integrity Insurance Brokers closed championship over two days at the weekend with the women’s title retained by the defending champion and the men’s section producing a new winner.
Elaine Walker took the spoils in the women’s division with a gross 182 and Jared Scharneck played two under par for a 142 gross to annex the closed titles. The sponsor, Integrity Insurance Brokers, ensured the tournament was well supported and their generous sponsorship went down to all winners.
The nett competition for golfers with handicaps between zero and nine saw Siya Mdingi score 142 nett to win the A division ahead of Jared Scharneck off a +1 handicap to score 144. Johnny de Villiers scored 146 to take a solid third position on 146.
The B division for golfers with a handicap between 10 and 16 was a close affair with Thami Pandle (147) winning ahead of Vusi Mandindi (153) and Duggie Rheeders (153). The C division winner by a small margin was Morne “Rot” Roodt with 145 nett ahead of Johan van der Mescht (148) and Piet Hattingh (149).
The women’s division was also competitive, but Gay Wormald won at a canter on 144 nett in front of Sanet Pieterse on 150 nett in second spot.
The good field of 47 golfers enjoyed a course in great shape with the greens running true, and they also held any well-struck shot.
The field prizes for closest to the pin were won by Gay Wormald (eighth) on Saturday and Job Gobizembe (eighth) on Sunday. The closest for two were Wayne Goldschmidt and Johnny de Villiers on the two days.
With perfect golfing weather, the championship was a great success and thanks must go to the committee and Integrity Insurance Brokers.
This weekend there will again be a medal Stableford competition with the fifth round of the Old Mu- tual Grand Prix taking place. The following weekend there will be a sponsored day in aid of SPCA funds on June 11.
