CHDM event leaves a load of litter

- By Bhongo Jacob

SANDRINGHAM residents woke up to litter on the Sandringham Sports Club field after a Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) event last week.

Residents who spoke to The Rep expressed their disappointment about the mess after a two-day event, which ended last Thursday but was only cleaned up on Monday.

Andries Schlebusch said he could not take his family for their Sunday outing.

“We usually play on the field on Sundays but it was full of trash. They did not clean over the weekend, only this week. Why did it take so long? People who want to use the field must clean up immediately.”

A resident who did not want to be named said the litter had been blown into their yards after the tent had been removed.

“One would have expected part of the packing-up crew to be cleaning.”

A school had hosted a hockey tourney on the field two weeks ago and had mowed the grass, resulting in the district municipality being able to use a field in a good condition, but left it worse than it was before.

Thembelani Mtshiselwa passes through the field daily on his way to work and said it was bad to see the municipality fail to clean up.

“This place was dirty for the whole weekend. It was full of empty take-away containers and some were scattered in the [nearby] road.”

Sikho Xaba said, “It should not take the municipality three days to pick up papers they left lying around. When the officials left the field to go to their offices, what did they think would happen to the dirt that they left behind?

“This is an embarrassment to the municipality and I hope next time they will do better than this.”

CHDM had not responded to queries sent to them by The Rep on Tuesday.
