SOUTH Africa ranks among the worst offenders as a nation when it comes to the sheer quantity of alcohol being consumed. According to the World Health Organisati­on, SA as a boozing nation is ranked at 19th out of 194 countries.

The Rep’s took to the streets to find out what makes South Africans consume so much alcohol and the impact it is having on society. hol abuse and the government should be stricter on shebeens and keep youngsters out of drinking places.

This has a negative impact in our country because children who start will end up in fights and car accidents happen as a result.

There are far too many places that sell alcohol. There are a lot of places that do not keep to the rule of not selling alcohol to people under the age of 18, especially in the rural areas. That is why there is such a high crime rate, including rape which is committed when people are drunk.

South Africa has too many people who drink because they have a lot of stress. People have problems at home. It is also shocking that a lot of youths drink because they learn it from their parents. Alcohol abuse leads to fathers being aggressive and abusive and mistreatin­g children, driving them to go out and to do bad things.

People think alcohol is the only way to solve their problems. Many can not deal with their problems and they use alcohol to escape their challenges. A lot of young people drink. There are a lot of school and university drop outs and abuse in families. Families are no longer stable because of all the drinking that is happening in our country.

It is the advertisin­g of alcohol, the media has pumped this idea of drinking to unwind and to be cool and young people lose direction when raised in households where parents drink.

This drinking creates a vicious cycle that is not easily broken and results in moral decay.
