Band member Andiswa Keswa said this week the band was her “happy zone” which prevented her from engaging in destructive behaviour. The music ensemble from the United Christian Apostolic Church of Zion started last year with only six members. Over the past few months, the numbers have swelled to 30 members. Acting band leader Ayanda Molefe said the band was open to all youths from the community. Practise sessions are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays, leaving young people with little time to roam the streets. A shortage of instruments is, however, posing a problem.

Molefe said the band was only supported by the founder of the church, Reverend Nokuzola Kela. “She bought the instruments and made the uniforms and covers most of the band’s expenses. We need to find a sponsor to assist us with the necessary equipment.”

The band was hoping to produce an album in the near future and to branch out to other towns.

The band recently performed at the Word of Faith gala dinner in Ezibeleni.

Molefe said their performances had received positive responses from audiences, with the band set to perform at a church ceremony at United Christian Apostolic of Zion at Scenery Park in East London.
