Bodybuilder, 76, still active in gym

MZIWANDILE Tom

is living proof that age is just a number. Known as one of the oldest members at his gym, the 76-year-old is redefining ageing with a daily workout every morning.

He takes us back to the ’50s when he was introduced to weights through rugby.

“I have lived all my life in Komani. I started lifting weights at the age of 18 and it has always been a part of my life. I joined because I used to play rugby at Nkwanca High School,” he explained.

It was a teammate who suggested they start weightlifting to stand a better chance of winning the rugby games which were popular at that time.

With many accolades under his belt, the former flyhalf said he played for several local teams before a knee injury made him give up the game, leaving him with no other option but to become a professional bodybuilder.

“I competed a lot. I have Border colours for weightlifting and have travelled to many places because of this sport. I also made it to the South African Masters and broke the record for 240kg deadlifts.”

He said as a result of his commitment to bodybuilding, he never smoked or drank alcohol and his love for gym made him ignore the cold winter mornings to get there early.

Tom said he would like to do weightlifting till his last breath.

“I am not doing it to compete now, I just want to keep fit. Power-lifting is not just about building your body. Through it, you gain mental strength as well.”
