Tough two weeks of rugby ahead for Super League teams

- By Maxwell Levine

SHINING Stars are the toast of the town after overpowering Old Collegians 27-21 in a league derby match at Mlungisi Stadium.

The Mlungisi side now has the bragging rights over their rivals and collected all five points on offer to move above OC on the log to seventh with 13 points.

Collegians’ dismal season continued as they laboured to a single point out of the game. They are ninth on the log with 11 points.

In the Super League, Police have finally stopped the four-year monopoly that Old Selbornians had over the league by beating them 17-15 at Police Park, in the process clinching the league title.

With one match to go, Police have an unassailable six-point cushion over their closest rival. The Bobbies, as Police are affectionately known, remain the only unbeaten team this season.

Old Boys suffered their second loss and have 38 points. In other results, Ocean Sweepers gave Berlin Tigers a lifeline by beating relegation-threatened Africans 25-18. Berlin Tigers got their first win of the campaign with a clinical 39-12 over Buffs to take all five points. The win moved Tigers to ninth on the log with 10 points. Cambridge won 24-12 at Winter Rose.

The matches between All Blacks and Swallows against Fort Hare were postponed due to the students being on holiday.

Four of the bottom teams have 10 points each and are only separated by a points difference.

Breakers, Winter Rose and Africans join Tigers on 10 points each. It’s going to be a tough end to the season and no team can afford to drop points.

Breakers still have to deal with an appeal against Tigers and have to travel to Fort Hare; All Blacks and Winter Rose are away from home. Africans must play Fort Hare and Cambridge. Winter Rose have an appeal hovering in their match against Swallows and must still deal with Breakers. Berlin Tigers have All Blacks left.

Taking all permutations into consideration, it will be a tough two weeks for all four teams. A CALL is being made to Komani residents to support the local team which is due to race tomorrow at the East London Grand Prix Circuit in Greenfields.

Two Golfs will be racing in the Modified Saloon Race with drivers Sean Heidemann (green vehicle) and Alec Gudmanz (white vehicle). Derek Boy will be behind the wheel of the Chev Firenza Can-Am V8 and Ryan Boy will drive the Ford Capri Pirana V8

A highlight of the day will be a three-hour sports car endurance race.
