Doctor’s passion for kids boosts Komani

Oosthuizen’s return to her roots to focus on obstetrics

- By Chux Fourie

THERE’S a new doctor in town, but she’s certainly no stranger to Komani.

Dr Angela Oosthuizen attended school at Balmoral and GHS, where she matriculated top of her class in 2005 with seven distinctions, so she knows our town well. She not only received the school’s top academic awards, but she also represented Border at squash, and still enjoys playing socially when time allows.

After matriculating, Oosthuizen attended University of the Free State to study medicine and was awarded the Golden Key Award for academic excellence in 2007.

After graduating in 2010, with an MBChB, she fin- ished her two-year internship at the Provincial Hospital in Uitenhage.

But nothing could keep her away from her home, family, life partner and community for too long and she returned to Komani to complete her community service at the Frontier Hospital.

While working at the hospital, she developed a passion for obstetrics and the care of newborn infants and babies. Oosthuizen spent four years at the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Frontier Hospital, before furthering her studies and obtaining a Diploma in Obstetrics (Dip Obst [SA]) from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa earlier this year.

When there is time in her busy schedule, Angela loves reading, cooking and baking, and, although she describes herself as “not very creative” she loves recycling and making something new and interesting out of something old, that would perhaps have been thrown out. Now she is going into private practice and, from August 1, joins Dr Susan Christiane and Dr JP Meyer at 41 Grey Street. Angela says: “I am nervous and excited as it is a whole new domain for me, but I’m really looking forward to this new challenge and to meet new patients. I will work as a general practitioner, but my obstetrics qualification will add an extra dimension to the practice.”
