TRUCKS TO AID IN CBD CLEAN UP

- ZOLILE MENZELWA

THE Enoch Mgijima Municipality has welcomed the addition of two new compactor trucks for refuse removal at a cost of just under R1-million.

Executive mayor Lindiwe Gunuza Nkwentsha received the trucks from UD Trucks sales manager John McKenzie.

She said the trucks would assist in the refuse removal problem currently facing the local authority. She said the town was very dirty and it was embarrassing.

Gunuza Nkwentsha said employees wanted to work but did not have enough trucks, adding that the latest addition was just among a few of the service-related vehicles the local authority was going to buy.

“You find that a truck works all the shifts and can then be easily damaged. With this addition, people must know the times to take out the rubbish and we must have clear routes for collection. We will write and distribute a timetable of refuse collection.”

No one would invest in a dirty town, she added, saying that the trucks would mostly work in the CBD.

The municipality also received 25 wheelie bins to be used in the town.

“Dumping is a two-way process. If we don’t put out bins people will dump, but we must also say to the people they must not dump next to bins where bins have been provided. We have a programme in partnership with the Chris Hani Development Agency to have buy-back centres so that we can add value to waste.”

McKenzie said the two compactor trucks would be serviced in Queendustria where UD Trucks is based.
