Koyo to lead Salga in the Eastern Cape
FORMER Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) executive mayor and current council speaker, Mxolisi Koyo, was recently voted in as the South African Local Government Association (Salga) provincial chairman.
Speaking to The Rep after a council meeting on Wednesday, Koyo, who has been in local government since December 2000, said the structure would get more direction from the national conference later this month or early next month.
Salga is responsible for helping municipalities deliver quality services to communities.
Koyo said Salga would help build capacity within municipalities and capacitate councillors in their areas of oversight. “We want to encourage councillors and municipal officials to study,” Koyo said.
“This will help them execute their jobs and be able to find jobs when their term of office ends.”
Koyo said municipalities had to play an active role in Salga working groups and should aim for better relations with employees as labour unrest led to compromised service delivery.
“It means a lot that I have been elected chairman of Salga in the province.
“Capable leaders must lead.”
The main focus of Salga would be to ensure stable municipalities with troikas to work in a safe and clean environment.
Koyo said municipalities should embrace premier Phumulo Masualle's Masiphathisane programme.
