WATER DONATIONS FOR DORDRECHT AS DROUGHT WORSENS

- BHONGO JACOB

RESIDENTS from Who-Can-Tell outside Komani are in the process of constructing a dam – and cleaning up two existing dams – in a bid to alleviate the water woes facing the community.

Villagers who spoke to The Rep said the project started in September.

Group leader Velile Magwaza said they were living in fear of losing more livestock as the drought continued.

“The situation in our village is bad. Our livestock is dying and since September there is no water in the dams,” he said.

“The community sat down and decided to clean the dams. We are doing this for our animals so that when the rain comes it will be full.

“It would also be great if someone from the government could come and help us because now we are forced to queue at the taps to get water for ourselves and for our animals.”

Water was being sourced from other villages.

“We have to go long distances to get it in another village with a wheelbarrow. We raised this at a community meeting. It is a shame that we only get to see the elderly men and women coming to help on this project.”

Resident Vuyiswa Mdunyelwa said they struggled to do their domestic chores.

“We battle to do our laundry. We go to other villages to get water from their taps and we have to be up at 4am or else the water will be finished. It has been three months without water so we would like anyone who is able to help us to come and show us how we can do this.”
