SPCA takes in Komani strays

- BHONGO JACOB

MEMBERS of the Komani SPCA were disappointed by the zero turn-out of residents at a campaign aimed at teaching the public about proper procedures to follow in dealing with unwanted dogs.

The event was held behind the Mlungisi police station.

The Rep reported (“Stray dogs headache for SPCA”, 2 June) that the number of stray dogs roaming the streets of the Komani CBD was showing a steady increase.

Over recent months, dogs wandering around in packs have been seen searching for food on a daily basis, with the Komani SPCA’s Betty Cree saying at that time that litter in the streets was a major attraction as a food source for the dogs. Cree said residents were informed through a loud hailer on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning about the campaign.

“We went out and had a meeting with the Mlungisi police, where these alleged attacks by dogs are taking place. We had three state vets to come and tell the dog owners where to bring their unwanted dogs, but not one person showed up.’’

The event was aimed at informing the community about spaying and castration for their dogs.

“There is a state vet that people can take their dogs to and have them sterilised. Some of the dogs are in really bad condition. We just want to teach people that if they don’t want their animals they must bring them to us and not just throw them away in town.’’

A few houses in the township were visited and six unwanted dogs were handed over to the SPCA.

“One woman gave her pregnant dog, but we were still very disappointed that people did not come. The public loves to moan but we gave them a chance. ‘’

The animal welfare body will host another campaign next month.

“We will have another meeting at the end of the month and hopefully another campaign in July. This is everyone’s problem. The people must play their part. They must bring the animals to us on these days,” she said.
