SPCA OUTRAGE AT DUMPED PETS
12 animals already rescued by organisation this month
THE abandonment of unwanted pets in the Komani area is on the increase.
In the latest incident, the Komani SPCA staff found eight puppies tied in a bag outside the SPCA premises, which is located just outside Komani on the road to Dordrecht and Lady Frere, on Monday.
The SPCA’s Betty Cree said the bag was taped closed and the animals had to be put down because they were in a bad condition.
“We saw a bag outside our gate and when we opened it we found the eight puppies.”
On Tuesday, another box was found outside the premises, this time with a note inside, identifying the animal as being named “Misty” and asking the SPCA to take care of it.
Unfortunately the animal was no longer inside. “I think it must have been a cat because a puppy would not have been able to jump out of the box. The person could have called and told us that they wanted to hand the animal over.”
A total of 164 animals have been rescued by the animal welfare body since January this year.
“We have managed to rescue 12 animals already this month. It’s only the first week of the month and we have so many animals.”
She urged residents to visit the state vet for help. “We have private and state vets in town. If people do not want their animals to breed they must take them to the vets to have them spayed or castrated to prevent this cruelty to animals.
“It is not right to just leave the animals in a box outside the gate. People must come in to sign the documents for our records and hand the animal over.”
The SPCA is busy with another campaign to educate schoolpupils on how to look after animals.
“We have visited two schools. We invite the pupils to visit the SPCA so they will grow up to become more responsible animal owners.”
