Boys must learn how to treat women

- ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA

BOOT camps to help young boys learn how to treat women and that abuse is wrong – this is the suggestion of the Hope Organisation.

The organisation, based in Komani, handed over a memorandum at the Mlungisi police station on Saturday.

The body led a march in protest against women and child abuse from the Komani town hall to the police station.

The memorandum, which was received by Colonel Bulelwa Lembese, stated, “We call on all people who are abused and know of any domestic abuse to report these cases”.

The association listed Nocawe Ntsume from New Bright in Mlungisi who was murdered last year, and the brutal killing of Karabo Mokoena from Gauteng as examples of women who had been murdered.

“We know many Karabos in our community – let us fight against women and child abuse.”

Hope Organisation representative Nobenguni Mzamo said community members needed to participate in such movements.

“You cannot just sit at home and use your phone to comment on social media. Go out in the streets and let people know that you are part of the people who say “No!” and are taking a stand against abuse. If you are not taking action your words become meaningless.”

She advised women to be safe and to never leave their homes without informing someone where they were going.

Mzamo said local organisations that supported children who were abused, were invited (including the department of social development, schools, churches, sport teams and the neighbourhood watches) to join the march, but the majority had failed to attend.

The group was thankful to the traffic department and police for their support of the event.
