FOODIES COOK OFF FOR GRAND PRIZE
Spargs SUPERSPAR crowns Creative Cooks winner
AROMAS of the cooking of delicious meals filled the air as the SPAR Local Legends Creative Cooks Competition, under the watchful eye of season one MasterChef South Africa participant and In the Kitchen
with Khaya presenter Khayakazi Kepe as judge, took centre stage at Spargs SUPERSPAR on Friday.
The winner of the competition was Penelope Mzamo, who won R10 000 worth of shopping at the store. Mzamo competed against three other local contestants.
Khepe said she had competed in the South African version of
MasterChef in 2012 and was currently presenting food recipes and general ideas on budget-friendly meals in a show, sponsored by SPAR, every Friday at 10.45am on Umhlobo Wenene FM‘s Khanya Giyazana show.
“I was recruited by SPAR to be responsible for the Creative Cooks Competition to make sure that all stores knew what criteria to follow for the competition and to oversee the judging.”
Creativity was the main factor considered when it came to choosing the winner.
“We look at customer appeal which is important because some of the stores are going to recreate the dishes in their deli so it has to look attractive to customers.”
Mzamo’s carrot dish was simple but its taste, texture, flavour, creativity, customer appeal and visual appearance scored high.
The other participants were beaten by time. “The mutton and beef stew contestants underestimated the cooking time because the meat was still chewy and hard.”
All 113 stores in the SPAR Eastern Cape Group hosted their own Creative Cooks Competition, Kepe said.
“The 113 winners will go to Port Elizabeth for a gala dinner in September which will be an event to say congratulations and thank you for supporting SPAR.
“The official date will be communicated to the stores, which will inform the winners.”
