ILINGE SCIENTIST IS A RISING STAR

- SIMTEMBILE MGIDI

THE youngest black woman scientist in South Africa, Dr Zikhona Tywabi-Ngeva, who originally hails from Ilinge, has been announced as a semi-finalist in the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa Top 100 for 2018.

The show which includes the beauty pageant airs on SABC 3.

Ngeva is the only black woman lecturer and researcher in the chemistry department of the University of Fort Hare. She is passionate about empowering the youth. In a telephonic conversation about being a semi-finalist in the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa Top 100, she said she was feeling nervous but excited.

“I am stepping out of my comfort zone and I am proud of myself. I believe that this pageant will give me a platform to be able to reach out to the youth from my area. I want to create change.”

She said the pageant focused on women who were community builders.

She said she considered the pageant a good platform to meet up with others with the same ambitions and hopes to empower the youth.

She was hoping to work with young people in the Komani area in the future.

Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa media executive Lisa Madibe said the pageant was a female empowerment program for married women in South Africa, but it was not a typical beauty pageant.

“Through the journey of Mrs South Africa, women either find themselves again or use the platform to influence others and to follow their dreams and become voices of change.”

She said the platform allowed women to inspire communities.

Ngeva’s father, Melikhaya Twyabi, said: “God works in mysterious ways. Zikhona is showing that God has a purpose for her life, she is not just here to eat, sleep and die, she is doing something productive with her life.”
