Plans for Chris Hani month
Freedom Marathon and more
THE Chris Hani District Municipality has planned a series of events this month to honour the late apartheid struggle stalwart Chris Hani.
April has been dubbed “Chris Hani month” as the late South African Communist Party general secretary and Mkhonto Wesizwe commander was killed on April 10, 1993.
This month’s events will have the theme “Defining the legacy of Chris Hani in action” and will include the annual Chris Hani Freedom Marathon and a memorial lecture.
CHDM mayor Kholiswa Vimbayo said the scheduled events were pertinent to community projects which were aligned with the slain anti-apartheid activist who had fought for the people of this country to enjoy such privileges.
“Every year we dedicate a portion of funds to service delivery projects and memorial lectures to conscientise people about the fallen struggle heroes,” Vimbayo said.
“We will showcase multi-millionrand projects, launch and hand over agricultural equipment to enhance crop production and also hand over agricultural equipment at the Qamata Irrigation Scheme.
“We encourage people to participate in the popular Chris Hani Freedom Marathon which traces the footsteps Hani travelled to and from school and church.”
The service delivery projects were preceded by the Mitrock Production Co-operative in Mitford village, where pomegranates were harvested last month for sale to markets for the first time.
Last Friday, the district municipality handed over a new tractor and agricultural equipment, and a taxi rank in Ngcobo, before ending with the Albertina Sisulu memorial lecture.
