Debt led to dog bite, says man
N EZIBELENI man, Xolile Ngumla, has laid a criminal complaint against a former policeman who, he said, set his dog upon him.
Ngumla, 45, from Unathi Mkefa, said he was severely injured as a result.
Ngumla was spending the afternoon in a pub with friends, when a man whose wife he owed R750 came to pick him up.
He said the man took him to his house and allegedly released his pitbull to bite Ngumla.
“I did not resist getting into the car when the former policeman and his friend asked me to join them because I knew that I owed them.
“I was shocked when we reached his yard and he released his dog to bite me.
“I thought we were going to discuss an alternative way to settle the debt.
“I had told his wife I could not afford to pay in May and I offered that she take my bank card as a sign of commitment to pay in July,” he said.
Ngumla, a father of three, who works for Community Works Programme (CWP) in Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, said he had now lost his wages as he would not be paid if he did not work.
“I am the breadwinner. My children will suffer as I am not able to walk at present. I am solely relying on my family for support.
“It is even worse because my niece has to pay for medical expenses.”
ANgumla’s niece, Onwaba Ngumla, feared her uncle could lose his leg as his doctor said the wound was infected. “The doctor said his leg might be amputated. My uncle will be our full responsibility because of a negligent person.
“I wish the law would play its part for my family to get justice. We are saddened by this.”
Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni confirmed that the police had opened a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm in Ezibeleni.
No arrests had been made.
