Turn municipal crisis around
This is a sad story after our 24 years of our democracy. The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality is in crisis due to short-sighted politicians.
They were greedy to incorporate other municipalities even though they realised they could not even maintain the old Lukhanji Municipality.
Yes, we are the majority as black residents of Komani.
We brought the beautiful town to its knees because our majority replaced the administrators with politicians. Administration managers and politicians are two different entities.
The administration personnel are trained or have experience to administer and politicians are there to monitor and level the playing fields in order for all of us have equal opportunities. Not that all of us are sleeping. We know the bigger the municipality, the higher salaries our councillors get, regardless of whether we incorporate bankrupt municipalities like Nkwanca and Tsolwana that came in to Lukhanji Municipality with their hands in their pockets, having no assets or revenue.
Is this South Africa a state of looting? All they are interested in is to get money on the 25th or month-end. No town planning is in place. Such a beautiful town is now infested with shops in Cathcart Road selling building materials with bricks, wheelbarrows, fences and window frames displayed on the pavement.
Pedestrians have to walk where vehicles are supposed to drive. There are no law-abiding motorists – they can park anywhere, even where parking is prohibited by law. People pee all over town and the town stinks.
Where is our pride as the people of Komani? It is like the Bible story where the Israelites were ruled and conquered by the Romans and were killing each other.
Wake up, Komani people! Let’s do the right thing for our town. We brought apartheid to its knees, so why don’t we stand together for our town? We have clever people, so stand up and do the right thing.
