No help with lost cards

- NEWMAN Sigenu of Komani writes:

On Friday July 13, I lost a wallet containing a variety of cards which included those belonging to Edgars and Woolworths for shopping transactions.

They were with banking cards for FNB, American Express and Standard Bank.

My Gems medical card was among the missing items which could also be misused.

I only realised this while I was making payments at a retail store. It was already in the evening.

When I checked my phone it indicated that an attempt had been made to withdraw money but failed as a wrong PIN number had been used which, in fact, I had not done.

It dawned on me that someone else had tried to use the card and that whoever had got hold of the wallet, might have tried to make the withdrawal.

On Saturday July 14, I wrote a note to the two retail stores mentioned to alert them and to indicate that they should not honour any purchases unless there was positive identification.

The response I got was that this could not be done, especially if the customer happened to be male.

The concern is that whoever gave this response, does not have the best interests of the customer at heart.

On Sunday, I tried to report the issue to the Komani police station but the members who listened could/would not even record the matter in their entry books.

As a citizen, one feels one’s interests (safety and security) are being compromised. A better response was expected.

Where do I go from here?
