Consuming our country

-

e need to do something about alcohol consumption in SA.

It may seem like a statement out of the blue, but indications are that alcohol consumption is climbing in a country wracked by poverty and crime. It’s a vicious cycle, and we need to confront the reality that alcohol abuse plays a significant role in many social ills.

Last December, BusinessTech indicated that SA was ranked the 19th-biggest drinking nation in the world and third in Africa.

More than a quarter of the drinking population in SA are considered binge drinkers, consuming at least 60g or more of pure alcohol in one session in a 30-day period.

The related problems of alcohol abuse are myriad – drunken driving, for which SA is notorious, increased poverty, crime, violence – and our children are not exempted from these harsh realities.

Foetal alcohol syndrome, abuse and neglect are but some of the effects of alcohol on the

Wyouth who often continue in the tradition of those before them, using alcohol as a means of escape.

What can be done to curb the unfettered and irresponsible consumption of alcohol?

While some have promoted a ban on alcohol advertising similar to that of tobacco, others have indicated that education should be at the forefront.

In reality, much of what we currently do in SA is to try and address the effects of alcohol abuse rather than to ensure prevention.

Stricter regulation of the liquor industry, more help centres for alcoholics, awareness campaigns and education at school level might all help.

We need a concerted effort, however.

We need the Liquor Board to be strict about the approval of licences and for places operating illegally to be closed down.

We need a community willing to step up and realise that we are feeding a monster. And it’s consuming our country.
