Posters deface Post Office walls

-

KOMANI residents saw red when they woke up on Monday to find posters struck to the walls of the Post Office in Cathcart Road.

Some residents posted pictures on Facebook, calling on the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) to take action and to implement by-laws prohibiting such actions.

Gcobani Msindwana of the EMLM communications section indicated it was the post office’s duty to remove the posters as it was not a municipal building.

He said EMLM had been in touch and had called for the removal of the posters.

The Rep reporter contacted event organiser Prophet Pumzile Topie, whose number was on the poster. The person who answered the phone said the advertising company which was hired to do the posters, was responsible for gluing these against the walls. When The Rep asked for the contact details of the advertising company, he put down the phone.

In a statement, regional manager in the Eastern Cape, Nombulelo Ngubane, regional manager of the SA Post Office (SAPO) in the Eastern Cape, she condemned the actions.

“The sandstone walls of the building are pervious, which means the glue penetrates the walls and removing the posters is a costly and tedious process.”

She was disappointed at the disrespect with which the organisers of the event treated the building. “The Queenstown Post Office is a landmark in town and should be respected as such. Defacing the building with posters advertising a once-off commercial event – which means the posters will soon be irrelevant anyway – is similar to an act of vandalism.”

SAPO would consider recovering the cost of removing the posters from the event organisers.
