CHDM helps SMMEs with R40m
A total of 40 emerging small, medium and macro enterprises (SMMEs) have received a major boost of R4m from the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM).
The SMMEs submitted their application forms for funding to the municipality.
The R4m was used to purchase essential equipment for the local businesses for their growth and development.
Beneficiary Mabhuti Ncamile, of Masibulele Winders, in Komani said, “My company has been operating since 2010 and I have been in dire need of essential tools required for my operations. CHDM came to my rescue by acquiring wiring and tools.”
Ncumile said his business specialised in repairing sewer pumps, but that he lacked the tools to do the work.
“I am now able to function independently and in the long run I am to work directly with government as I am currently getting appointments as a sub-contractor.”
CHDM communications spokesperson Thobeka Mqamelo said, “A number of businesses across CHDM jurisdiction continue to receive support as part of CHDM’s SMME strategy which was developed in 2010.
“The implementation of the strategy has seen establishments in various sectors receiving funding in the form of equipment, machinery and trading stock, and at times, the transfer of financial resources depending on the nature of a request and approval.”
Mqamelo said CHDM had also developed a monitoring mechanism in an effort to ensure proper use of material acquired and to provide necessary technical assistance in order for businesses to thrive.
“Funding for other SMMEs will also be allocated in the current financial year as guided by the funding model that was endorsed by council in 2017. This new model seeks to ensure a transparent and credible process of selection for funding. Only businesses and projects based in Chris Hani District Municipality are eligible to apply.”
She said businesses operating in CHDM were encouraged to make use of such opportunities and that the municipality had to empower local SMMEs which would, in turn, help to enhance the local economy.
The portfolio head for integrated planning and economic development, councillor Sibongile Mbotshane, expressed his delight at the commitment of CHDM towards supporting small businesses.
“We are pleased to have taken giant steps in fulfilling our commitment to local businesses. The council is trying its best to ensure assistance is given to all deserving and emerging businesses across the district. With the new funding model, we will be able to ensure that our selection is impartial and benefits sustainable businesses.”
