Political dissent rocks civic body

- ANDISA BONANI

Political differences have rocked the newly formed civic organisation Komani Residents, leading to the ousting of secretary, EFF affiliated Axolile Masiza, last Wednesday.

Masiza, who called a joint media briefing with the rest of the organisation’s executive to tell his story, said a motion of no-confidence was tabled against him which led to his removal.

“I have been accused of frivolous things which are just to tarnish my character and reputation. They tabled a motion against me but the organisation does not even have a constitution. People who served did so voluntarily. There are no disciplinary guidelines for members.”

Masiza said issues began surfacing in May when some members of the executive affiliated to the ANC brought their party’s views to meetings.

“The main aim was to get rid of EFF. I am not sure why because there are only two of us and the majority are ANC. We had executive members say in meetings they were told by ANC friends how to deal with certain issues and when I called them out for it I became a problem.

“They have resorted to spreading false information about me but I have been of service to the poor of Komani. People know the kind of person I am. The lies they spread will not deter people from supporting my work, whether I am part of Komani Residents or not.”

Masiza said he was accused of collecting money in the name of the organisation, of campaigning to become an independent candidate in the election and of squandering money meant for poor residents.

“I have sacrificed time and money to ensure the organisation gained momentum during its formation. We have pointed out and sought to address issues where the municipality failed, but things have changed and I am portrayed as wanting to overthrow EMLM mayor Sisisi Tolashe, with whom I have no problem.

He said he was no longer part of the executive group but would continue to try to improve the lives of the poor. Komani Residents deputy secretary Ngqele Klaas said he was not aware of the intention to convene a media briefing, and he would have to consult the rest of the executive before he responded.
