Rainbow Stars celebrate 16 years with tournament

- SIMTEMBILE MGIDI

Rainbow Stars Football Club celebrated their 16th birthday with a soccer tournament on Monday.

Manager Madoda Kamte said it was the second birthday tourney, after the event was introduced last year.

A total of 16 teams took part in 2017, with 10 in 2018: Rainbow Stars, Young Lions, Athletico, Kaizer United, Phoenix, Burning Flames, Ravens, Seven Stars, Attackers and Milan, from Ilinge.

“This year teams paid an entry fee of R100 to participate. The

U19 tournament started on Monday and ended on Wednesday, while the U15 tournament will start on Friday.

The prizes in the U19 tournament are a trophy and

R150 for the team placed first and R150 for the second spot.”

Trophies would also be awarded for the top goal scorer and the man of the tournament, he said.

Milan was knocked out due to their points system.

Kamte said the purpose of this year’s tournament was to give the boys praise and show recognition.

“Most children do not have their parents at home saying ‘well done’ when they have done something praiseworthy, but on the soccer field we praise them.”

This year’s tourney had revealed a wonderful display of talent, with many goals scored.

He appealed to parents to check that their children attended sports practice instead of using drugs.
