Rainbow maths olympiad a boost for EC pupils
SOLUTION TO number 1159
The Rainbow Mathematics team, who aim to promote maths among primary school pupils, held their first awards ceremony after 6,014 pupils took part in an Olympiad held throughout the province.
The best performers were recognised at a ceremony at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Complex last Saturday.
The competition was recently started by four teachers from George.
Rainbow Mathematics director Sibongiseni Mayeki, said the Olympiad was tailored for Eastern Cape schools.
The initiative to start a maths Olympiad “came after we saw there were a number of Olympiads in the Western Cape which were attended by multiracial school pupils, but there were not many for black schools. We came to an agreement to do one for “
Eastern Cape schools,” Mayeki said.
However, he said funding had been a challenge, with the team having to carry the costs for the Olympiad.
We believe pupils under-perform in
“maths due to teachers not being welltrained for the maths curriculum, with technology now being involved. Through this competition we want to
“motivate pupils to do well in maths by giving them great prizes.”
The maths competition began with round one written at schools in July, with questions and memos provided to teachers. The top 10 performers received prizes. The top six received tablets, the next three, bicycles, and the 10th, a smartphone.
The top 10 pupils are from Ngubezulu Primary, in Ngcobo, and Nontuthuzelo Primary, in Gompo, East London.
We plan to keep track of the top 10
“performers who we aim to assist with bursaries for the future,” he said.
Next year, a centre will be organised for “pupils to write the second leg of the competition with invigilators.
We will launch our website soon, but
“schools can make use of our Facebook page on how to register for 2020.”
