Educating children about abuse
Engcobo resident Sinawo Poswayo recently hosted a Stop Violence Against Children awareness day event for pupils in her home town.
The event, jam-packed with fun-filled activities for the youth, was attended by more than 100 pupils from five schools in the area at Heroes Park.
Poswayo said she had decided to host the event to help create awareness and a safer environment for children, after the recent countless reports of child abuse and murders in SA. Parents are aware of this
“violent behaviour and we know it exists, but it often happens in our absence,”
Poswayo said. When
“children are exposed to violence and abuse, they need to know channels they can follow in case they become victims of such abuse.
The event was aimed at “providing preventative education,” she said.
Poswayo invited officials from the departments of social development and health, the SAPS, as well as individuals involved in the fight against violence against women and children. One of the speakers was “a person who was victimised at a very young age but could not talk about it as the perpetrator was someone close to her family.
The initial idea was to
“also address those who commit these crimes because they too might be victims of abuse and we want them to get the necessary help to prevent this from persisting.”
Poswayo thanked all who had supported the event including the office of the
“mayor which greatly assisted in its success and Engcobo SUPERSPAR Spargs which also contributed by providing party packs for the children ”.
