Vintage took on Northern Region Warriors as the fifth edition of the Eyekasi Cricket Tournament kicked off at Nkwanca High School on Saturday.

Vintage won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Josh Goss put the Warriors batsmen on the back foot early, taking three wickets in the first over.

Mkululi Takane managed to give Warriors some leeway and bowled two no-balls in his first two deliveries, but Warriors failed to capitalise and lost their veteran, Viwe Yawa, who was lazy between the wickets.

The Warriors team collapsed, putting on a below-par score of 43.

Vintage cricketers Siphiwo Ndaba and Mohammed Mahdi went in to face the Warriors bowlers first. The pair respected Yawa but went at a run-rate of 8.2 an over by attacking the other end. The game was disrupted and eventually abandoned on Saturday due to rain.

Takane said 13 players participating in the tournament would be selected to represent the Komani group at the Emacal eGusha tournament from December 27-29 in King William s Town.

Four top teams compete in the event including Siseko Dalamba and Spartans. Cricketers are back for the holidays and players are allowed to play for the teams of their choice,” said Takane.

The tournament will resume this weekend.

Yawa is confident his team will bounce back and be eventual winners. Warriors will depend on the services of Nathan Roux, Iviwe Gwana and Luyolo Nkosana, who all hail from Bloemfontein. Anathi Joe and Marvin Groep will try their best to make sure that Vintage will, for the first time, win the tournament,” said Yawa.
