Mr President, Brazil needs Nguni cattle
The government of Brazil is clearing large tracts of the Amazon rainforest for cattle ranching.
Brazil, the US, India and Australia are the worlds largest exporters of beef. In my view, this slash and burn practice to clear rainforest is totally unnecessary.
SA s Nguni cattle, boergoats, Kalahari reds and African goats could save the Amazon rainforest as they are browsers and grazers.
My plea to you, Mr President, is for you to introduce your counterpart in Brazil to the value of these breeds.
By doing so, Brazil can continue to export beef and venison, while at the same time saving the environment from further devastation.
The meat of the Nguni is organic because these animals seldom receive antibiotics or medication or other chemicals. They calve with ease and can withstand the elements.
Nguni meat is sought after by many restaurants.
A luxury car seat manufacturer in Buffalo City uses only Nguni hides.
Commercial farmers who farm with Nguni cattle claim that they make more money from hides of the Nguni than from the meat, as the hides are also used for decorative purposes.
Venison, on the other hand is sought after in the Arab and Muslim world.
Exports of venison to these regions would enable Brazil to receive more revenue, while at the same time saving the rainforests.
Brazil could face sanctions by the international community if the country continues to pollute the environment.
