Old Queenian and 2014 Under 19 Cricket World Cup winner Kirwin Christoffels is aiming for some franchise cricket ahead of next season s expected shake-up

’ in the domestic system.

The former Eastern Province batsman/all-rounder is now with Oudtshoorn-based team South Western Districts, and said he was looking forward to the anticipated resumption of the season.

Domestic cricket is really

“competitive right now, with guys all looking to seal a call to a franchise team before the proposed move to do away with them,” said Christoffels.

Last year, Cricket SA announced it wanted to scrap the franchise system and return to provincial-based cricket.

The plan was due to be implemented in 2020.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic brought sports to a halt, the 25-year-old was in the UK off-season, playing and coaching at the King s Lynn

’ based club, North Runcton.

He was first offered a contract with the Norfolk Alliance Cricket Division team in 2018, through the world sport exchange programme.

While the overseas call-up might be on ice, the South Western Districts skipper will be hoping to replicate the numbers he achieved abroad here at home.

In the 2018 season, he averaged 40.24 for North Runcton, making 684 runs and bagging 26 wickets. In the 2019 season, a title-winning one, he contributed 665 runs, averaging 51.15, while taking 28 wickets. I really do not miss the

“winters here, but I have enjoyed spending more time with family and friends. They have more swing with the ball in the UK and that has really helped with my batting game,” he said.
