What do you think about…
To commemorate Heritage Month, The Rep intern Chuma Joni took to the streets of Komani and asked residents what they liked about their own cultural heritage.
Zakaria Mulla from Komani
I am proud to be a Muslim. We celebrate our religion like we celebrate Christmas. We pray five times a day and
drinking alcohol is not allowed.
Byron Flangan from New Vale
We do not really have a culture but I like the black culture. I like how they dress, how they paint their faces and how they embrace their beauty.
Edna Rthartley
from Ebden Street One of the things I love
about my culture is the way we speak. A lot of the words from our language is similar to German because boers are Dutch descendants. I also enjoy our braaivleis and delicious boere traditional meals and our sokkie music.
Sinesipho Xipu
from Komani
I enjoy umphokoqo (crumbly pap and amasi) which is my favourite
traditional meal. I love umbhaco which is our traditional attire. I admire the fact that Xhosa people are considerate people with love and are always willing to assist others.
Mwamba Mwelwa
from Top Town Zambians are calm, traditional and conservative people who respect other cultures. They are quite
within themselves but are friendly. If you are lost you will be guided. Our traditional clothing, music and food is intertwined with some of the African cultures, like Kenya and Ghana, especially with staple food. We also have a lot of fisherman. Many of our dishes are cooked with fish, whether its tiger fish or kapenta, which is smaller than sardines.
