Undefeated Komani SAPS win Wellness Games gold
With the aim of strengthening the intergovernmental relations, the SAPS hosted the Wellness Games at Sandringham sports field on Saturday.
According to the police, the departments have the same mandate of rendering services to the community.
Komani SAPS member Isaac Olifiri said: “This tournaments is for all departments.”
Olifiri said the tournament featured soccer and netball.
The first prize in the soccer tournament was R2,000 and runners-up took home R1,000.
“For football, the six teams were Aliwal North SAPS, defending champions Komani SAPS, Glen Grey Hospital, Ngcobo SAPS, Komani Hospital and Makhanda SAPS.”
Komani SAPS met Ngcobo SAPS in the final but due to darkness, with the score at 1-1, the game was postponed to a yet to be confirmed future date.
Warrant Officer Badie Njotini-Papiyana from Komani SAPS netball team said: “We were the hosts. Our aim was to unify the governmental departments following the
Batho Pele principles, which we need to practice among one another as government employees.”
For netball, only five teams participated.
Komani SAPS took home the first place floating trophy and 12 gold medals after they won all their games, beating Ngcobo 23-10, Aliwal North 24-10, Glen Grey Hospital 16-6 and Makhanda 23-3.
Aliwal North SAPS scooped the second prize of silver medals after beating Glen Grey Hospital 16-11, Ngcobo SAPS 11-10 and Makhanda 15-6.
Glen Grey Hospital went home with bronze medals after beating Ngcobo SAPS 13-11 and Makhanda 16-13.
“We thank our district commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph for giving us the permission to host these games,” Njotini-Papiyana said.
“The discipline that was shown up by the teams was excellent and they were so professional.
“Thanks to Southbourne Primary School as they are owners of the Sandringham fields for allowing us to be there,” Njotini-Papiyana said.
