Edlelweni pupils rushed to clinic

More than 55 Edlelweni Primary School pupils were rushed to Lizo Ngcana clinic in Unifound after they ate food they allegedly bought from a hawker outside the school premises yesterday.

When The Rep arrived at Lizo Ngcana clinic, parents blockaded the entrance.

Only the parents with the children inside were allowed inside the clinic. Not all parents were allowed inside the clinic to control the numbers.

The windows were opened and those who suffered from shortness of breath were given oxygen.

Some of the parents looked through the windows to check and speak to their children inside the clinic.

The children allegedly ate sweets, chocolate, fish bread and ice bompies they bought from a street vendor outside the school premises.

Edlelweni Primary School principal Zukisani Sondlo told The Rep that children bought the goods outside the school premises during break time.

“When they came back from the break they complained of itching on their bodies and some were feeling dizzy.

“Then they took them to the clinic where they were attended to and a cream was applied to their bodies,” he said.

“Those who were better were sent home while others were taken by ambulance to Frontier Hospital while others who had symptoms of fainting and were still inside the clinic.”

One of the parents, Afrika Kula, said he was called while in town.

“I quickly ran to the clinic as I am also an SGB member.

“More than 30 children were taken to the hospital. We were told that they ate ice and dagga muffins,” he said

“As parents we don’t want people selling outside the school,” Kula said.

It was reported that pupils from John Noah High School suffered from the same problem.
