Shop owner shot, customers injured
Police searching for two suspects: Businessman fighting for his life
Komani police are searching for two men in connection with a case of robbery and attempted murder after the owner of Jimmy’s Sweets shop, Mohammad Rafiq, was shot and is apparently fighting for his life in hospital.
Two customers who were in the shop at the time, a 19 and 22-year-old, were also injured and had to be rushed to hospital.
No details were available on their condition.
Members of the Queenstown police station rushed to the scene after the shooting.
Police spokesperson Captain Namhla Mdleleni said a case of business robbery and attempted murder had been opened for further
investigation.
“Members of the SAPS in Queenstown under the Chris Hani
District have activated a manhunt for the suspects involved in a business robbery incident, which occurred at
Robinson Road on Tuesday November 7 at about 5.30pm.”
Mdleleni said it was alleged that two unknown men had entered the shop and pretended to be buying cigarettes.
“It is reported that while the owner was assisting them, they pulled out guns and fired shots at him. A 19-yearold and a 22-year-old who were customers were also victims as they sustained injuries and had to be rushed to hospital,” Mdeleleni said.
According to Mdleleni, the suspects then fled the scene on foot without taking anything from the shop.
The Rep learnt from a reliable source that Rafiq was fighting for his life in hospital.
The source had no idea what could have led to the shooting.
A witness who wanted to remain anonymous said: “Two guys went inside the shop as if they were going to buy something and we soon heard gunshots before the guys ran out of the store.
“The owner was shot and hospitalised.”
On Wednesday, the shop was opened for business after police tape cordoning off the crime scene had been removed.
The shop’s garage door had two bullet holes.
